your body is a machine, think of sleep as in standby mode, it still required electricity to operate your heart, lungs, brain etc. otherwise you’d be dead.. So these organs are working even though you are sleeping, and they are using energy, so your body is burning calories..

You don’t I think. Your body doesn’t do much while your asleep therefore calories aren’t burned.

And NOT EATING will make you gain more weight. In fact, your better of eating 6-7 small meals a day instead of 2 huge ones.

You burn a few calories every night by breathing, moving in your sleep, etc.
It’s not really enough to lose weight, but sleeping at night is healthier for you anyway, especially the more sleep you get before midnight, the better.

Well your body burns calories simply when its functioning, the heart is pumping, the lungs are drawing in oxygen, your liver is removing toxins, and etc. When your sleeping its basically an extended fast for your body because it doesn’t have any immediate energy from the food you have recently consumed so it metabolizes your body’s sources of energy. Also when you sleep your body’s natural anabolic growth hormone peaks which is great for metabolizing your body and building muscle or just growing.

Caloric consumption in a society with readily available food is likely to be approximately proportional to the number of hours of being awake,By replacing one hour of being awake with sleeping, we forgo a significant consumption of food because of the resulting reduction in the opportunity to eat.

a person who sleeps seven hours a night and consumes 2,500 calories during the remaining 17 hours of the day can cut 147 calories by simply sleeping an extra hour instead of watching TV

You do burn calories when you are asleep, but that is because you burn calories doing anyway. Just sitting and breathing burns calories.

The problem is, sleeping and just sitting breathing burn too few calories for weight loss.

The more you exert yourself and exercise, the more calories you burn.

Some people talk about going to bed on empty stomach and sleeping to avoid feeling too hungry. That is not the sleep that is helping weight loss, it is the not eating part. The sleep just makes it easier to handle.

Well the reason you sleep is so that the body can repair its self. Your body works hard at night digesting food and re-juvinating its self. That’s what burns the calories.
That’s why people that don’t sleep have a higher risk of gaining weight. You need sleep to restore yourself.

While you burn more calories by being up and moving around, you still burn them when you are asleep. Your heart is always pumping and you are always breathing in addition to many other activities your body does while you sleep. Also, the more muscle you have the more calories you burn even while you’re asleep. You burn about 60 calories an hour while you sleep.
